1In Saudi Arabia, the UAE, Bahrain, Kuwait, Oman and Yemen, along roads and corniches, from shady parks, air-conditioned malls, restaurants and the din of crowded squares, from the bases of hundreds of crane or from wharfs lined with colored dhows, from “revolutionary” tents planted between adobe houses or from the top of high glass skyscrapers… the cities of the Arabian Peninsula offer the readers of Arabian Humanities, for this second issue, thousands of faces and outlooks that, by moving into ever-changing spaces, re-invent the future. This feature issue, edited by Claire Beaugrand, Amelie Le Renard and Roman Stadnicki, does not fail to point out the global aspects of these cities that have managed to capture the dynamics of trade, nor the problems that come with high urban growth, nor the decline of formerly thriving centers. The landscapes are becoming more diverse, along with their populations and social groups, who come into contact with or ignore one another, and different time scales appear.
2We would like to think of this issue, which highlights the diversity of experiences in the Arabian Peninsula as well as their many and fertile intersections, as a message to CEFAS management. Michel Tuchscherer’s term ended last August, the historian having led the center for four years. He has passed to Michel Mouton, the archaeologist, a firm and solid baton, and the center’s new objectives are the measure of its increased significance. Michel Tuchscherer carried forward, sometimes single-handedly, the CEFAS in the face of intense economic and political turmoil, and made it encompass the vast space of the Arabian Peninsula. Arabian Humanities is the brainchild of this insight, keen sense of responsibility and taste for action, all traits of Michel Tuchscherer. We have no doubt that Michel Mouton, whose enthusiasm we welcome, is the person to maintain this momentum.
